San Colombano Park covers an area of about 730 hectares in the municipality of Suzzara, in the floodplain near the villages of Riva and Tabellano. The area houses several riparian forests, poplar groves, arable land, wild willow groves, sand, wetlands in the vicinity of old clay quarries and "bugni" (typical water ponds caused by the breaking of an embankment during flood). During naturalistic requalification carried out by the Municipality of Suzzara since 2000, more than 250,000 plants belonging to the main indigenous species of the area have been planted: white poplar, black poplar, white willow, rural elm, oak, ash, Fraxinus, buckthorn, guelder rose, dogwood, elder, cornel, etc. The fauna is made up of typical species of wetlands and the associated wood formations. Among the birds we can mention: red and green woodpeckers, sparrowhawks, the hobby, the egret and the night heron. Among reptiles we can find the grass snake and the green whip snake and among the amphibians the the tree frog and the crested and spotted newt. The area in 1702 was the scene of the bloody battle of Luzzara for the succession of the Spanish throne. Today, at the church of the ancient village of Riva dedicated to the Irish Saint Colombano, the Memorial of Reconciliation stands. It is a megalithic monument that recalls the tradition of the precious stones circles of Ireland. In the park there are also a didactic forest, a river mooring, a large car park, a refreshment point, a public green area for free use, and a system of comfortable cycling paths that allow to discover areas of major naturalistic vocation. Access is free and allowed at all times of the year accordins to river levels. San Colombano Park is connected to the other protected areas of the Park System of Oltrepò Mantovano from the Ciclovia dei Parchi; along the Eurovelo EV8 itinerary and the 2d cyclists in the province of Mantua.
