St. Mary of Valverde Church

Santa Maria da Valverde is a Gothic-Romanesque treasure in the countryside of San Benedetto Po. The place still embodies the name that defines it: a lush greenery of meadows and cultivations, in the middle of which stands the little church, whose current shapes date back to a restoration of 1445. The interior decoration made up of the great fresco in the apse represents the Annunciation with the figure of the Eternal Father on the extrados and busts of prophets on the arch.

Santa Maria da Valverde, a Gothic-Romanesque treasure in the countryside of San Benedetto Po, originally in the diocese of Reggio (because in the south of the old Po), then under the Polironian abbey and now private property. You can get there leaving the major road, just before the crossing with Moglia, and entering a dirt road on the right. The place still embodies the name that defines it: a lush greenery of meadows and cultivations, in the middle of which stands the little church, whose current shapes date back to a restoration of 1445, so almost Renaissance age. It remains now only one apse, partially buried, but once it had to have three aisles. Here, the absidial half-columns of the other churches are replaced by pilasters, and the decorative parts (the diamond-patterned frames of single windows) references more towards a Lombard context. Although restored in the second half of the 15th century, the building still retains the original Romanesque style. At the apse you can see the elegant fifteenth century bell tower with octagonal plan. The interior decoration made up of the great fresco in the apse represents the Annunciation with the figure of the Eternal Father on the extrados and busts of prophets on the arch. Of no artistic value but still an object of deep devotion to present days is the statue of Our Lady sitting with the Child, which faces, in a niche above the altar, the sequence of apse figures. Due to the earthquake of May 29, 2012, the Church is currently closed.
